Pro wrestling is one of the most popular sports in the entire world. Some companies use professional wrestling to describe their business, while Vince McMahon’s WWE have used the term ‘sports entertainment’ instead of pro wrestling. Currently, there are two big wrestling promotions that have been gaining every pro wrestling’s fan attention.
First, as mentioned earlier, is World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), owned by Vince McMahon. The second is All Elite Wrestling (AEW), a new company that aims to bring about a revolution in the world of professional wrestling. So far, AEW have done a fine job with the Superstars they have. The Tony Khan-owned promotion has signed many former WWE Superstars.
2020 was a forgettable year for the wrestling fans. Although the two companies tried to give their best, absence of live audience for the most part of the year did not give the best quality shows to fans at home. But 2021 has been a ray of hope. Fans have returned to arenas, and also the touring has resumed. Speaking of 2021, apart from the return of the fans, the return of the following four megastars has also made pro wrestling worth watching.
CM Punk has been one of the most-talked-about names in the wrestling community. He is a former WWE Champion who left the company because of creative differences. Punk stayed away from the squared circle for seven years. He finally made his return to AEW in 2021.
Punk made his All Elite Wrestling (AEW) debut on an episode of Rampage which aired on August 13. A jam-packed United Center of Chicago welcomed him back to the world of pro wrestling. AEW have announced that Punk will wrestle his first AEW match against Darby Allin at the upcoming pay-per-view titled AEW: All Out.
John Cena is a 16-time WWE World Champion. Many fans were surprised when Cena did not wrestle at WrestleMania 37, considering the fact that it was a 2-night event. Cena was busy with his Hollywood schedule. However, he took time out of his schedule and made a full-time return to WWE.
The company promoted his matches as part of the ‘Summer of Cena’. While he did not wrestle on a WWE show after WrestleMania 36, Cena made up for it by wrestling at the live events. He also showed up at RAW and SmackDown episodes. Finally, ‘Summer of Cena’ ended with the main event match against Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. Unfortunately, Cena could not win his 17th world title.
Becky Lynch made an unexpected WWE return at SummerSlam. Looking at the way WWE booked The Man, it seems her return was a last-minute decision. Sasha Banks missed SummerSlam due to some unforeseen circumstances. Then, Carmella came out to wrestle Bianca Belair for the SmackDown Women’s Championship.
Fans were disappointed to see Carmella. However, Becky brought a smile to their faces by making her return. She then challenged Bianca for the title. In just 27 seconds, Becky defeated Bianca to become the new champion.
Another shocking return that happened at SummerSlam was of Brock Lesnar. The Beast Incarnate showed up for the first time since WrestleMania 36. He came back with a new look, and Lesnar seems to have set his eyes on WWE Universal Champion, Roman Reigns.
Lesnar vs Reigns is a feud that will draw every fan’s attention. With Paul Heyman also involved in the mix, it should be a blockbuster rivalry. This match will likely happen at Extreme Rules or Crown Jewel.
