Raquel Rodriguez Wants A New Title Introduced for the Women’s Division

Former NXT champion and the previous Women’s tag team champion Raquel Rodriguez has said that having a Women’s mid-card championship like the Intercontinental title or the North American title will benefit the Women’s division and wrestling in general because the women in WWE come from different backgrounds. While appearing on the Ten Count on NBC Sports Boston, these were her words: “..We have women from all over the world, from all over the country…I think having an Intercontinental championship, having a North American championship for the women would be something…” (7:15 – 7:40) on being asked by the host about women having another title like the men’s IC and US champions.

Rodriquez with Aliyah became the Women’s Tag Team Champions on the August 29^th edition of RAW but they soon lost the titles in 14 days to Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai. She has not been on the title picture since.

In the interview she also said that she would be open to facing all three members of DAMAGE CTRL (Bayley, Iyo Sky and Dakota Kai) in a handicap match and since Royal Rumble 2023 emanates from her home state of Texas, she would love nothing more than to win it there in front of friends and family and then headline WrestleMania. She made many upcoming match predictions and was even open to having Ricardo Rodriquez as her personal ring announcer as he was for Alberto Del Rio.

Coming back to her original headlining comment about wanting a separate title like men’s Intercontinental championship, it may sound like an interesting new idea but it does have its limitations. The women’s division is not deep enough to have another title as there aren’t enough women superstars present in WWE nor do they have detailed storylines going for them. Having too many titles would seem crowded for a handful of female performers. Also, pro wrestling is a male-dominated spectacle with mostly male fans who watch it for their big burly heroes in the ring, hiring more women could be counterproductive. That’s the harsh truth.
