Becky Lynch (Rebecca Quin) rose from humble beginnings to the top of WWE and became of the most successful female wrestlers of all time. With The Man persona of hers, she achieved a new level of stardom becoming a fan favourite among the WWE Universe. Under her belt, she has multiple Women’s championship reigns, a Royal Rumble Win as well as headlining and winning the main event of WrestleMania.

She has helped break ground for women in wrestling and is a major catalyst for Women’s evolution within the company. She was a top star regardless of her gender a few years back, rubbing shoulders with even top male superstars at the time.

As a young girl growing up in Ireland, The Man was trained by WWE superstar Finn Bálor. She grew up watching professional wrestling with her brother and when she wanted to try it herself, the only wrestling school in Ireland was Finn Bálor’s. Above pics are from her early wrestling days. She has always had a soft corner for her teacher.

She has confessed that she was on a dark path doing drugs, alcohol and going around with wrong people. She credits wrestling to have saved her from her demons and in helping her get her life back on track. For the physical requirements of the job, she started working out, eating healthy and started doing everything that would benefit her.

 

She started wrestling in 2002, was staying away from home in Florida and was a regular on the independent scene till 2006. But after suffering a concussion during a match she decided to step away from wrestling altogether, after pressure from her mom. She went into depression because of that and stayed away for 7 years doing other things to fill the void. She says she is grateful for those years because she wouldn’t have realised her love for wrestling without them.

After she stepped away from wrestling for good, Becky was convinced by her mother, to take a job as a flight attendant with Aer Lingus. Her mother, a former flight attendant herself, was trying to get her beloved daughter to step away from the dangerous business. Lynch worked with the airline for 4 years but hated it. She wanted to get out of that life every day.

While being away from wrestling, she was picking up hobbies to fill that gap wrestling had left. Strangely, she joined a clown college and started training as a Clown. She revealed on the Talk Is Jericho podcast, that she related being a clown to wrestling because they are both allowed to be silly. And there are plenty of similarities between the two like learning the tricks of the trade and the technical aspects of it like juggling. They both look easy from outside but are really not. However, she revealed at a later time that the whole art of clown was a wasted 3 years.

Maybe all those years in clown college helped her be a Rosebud with Adam Rose.

Few would remember her first gimmick in NXT when she debuted. It was that of an Irish dancer who Irish danced all the way to the ring and even during the matches. Thankfully, it didn’t last long.
